Hi! My name is Autumn. I’m the yoga teacher here at BluWing, and today I’d like to talk about the monkey mind.
Do you feel the pressure to just go, go, go? No time to stop, too many things on your list! Your mind is constantly interrupting itself because you’re trying to do many things at once. This seems all too typical of our current society. Even when we’re physically resting, our mind is still spinning.
In yoga, we call this the chitta vritti, the monkey mind. I began yoga because of my monkey mind over a decade ago, in college. Deadlines, pressure, my perfectionism driving me to perform without flaw all led up to an epic panic attack during a major presentation. Except, at that point, I didn’t know what a panic attack was. I just thought, I need help. My anxiety was taking control of me, and I needed SOMETHING. I sought out a counselor who suggested I try yoga.
My first yoga class is where I learned of the monkey mind. That’s what I have! I thought, this constant chatter inside my head. After a few classes, I noticed a difference. I had calm. I wasn’t so self-deprecating. I was kinder and more forgiving of my mistakes. Often, people with anxiety have a disconnect with their body. That was certainly the case for me. I could not tell you how I felt when I was beginning to feel nervous, because I was trying to ignore it. With yoga (and counseling), I was growing aware of all the ways my body was connected, and how it felt, and ways to release negative energy.
After a few months of going to yoga classes once a week, I hit the sweet spot. At the end of class, where you lie down in a conscience relaxation, my mind went completely BLANK! And I felt utter bliss. I thought, Why hadn’t anyone told me that by simply using my BREATH I could feel this good?! It was such a pivotal moment for me. The only relaxation tool I had was to have a few beers in the evenings, but this yoga thing – this was SO. MUCH. BETTER! Such a relief, a reset, a peace I couldn’t put into words.
It is to this place of peace I want to facilitate my students – to that complete calm which resides within, the acceptance of now. We already have what we need inside of us. Yoga is a great way of finding your true, beautiful, rested, unstriving SELF.
I hope to see you at Blu Wing, where you can experience your own beautiful bliss! Namaste.
Currently, classes are Tuesdays at 7pm, and Saturdays at 8am.
In the fall (Sept. 16 – Dec. 16), yoga will be offered Tuesdays 7pm, Thursdays 6pm, and Saturdays 9am.
